About the Scottish Tartan World Register
The Register’s Aims
Provide a ‘Public’ place where tartans can be displayed and examined
Categorise tartans by type, image and description so they can be easily referenced.
Publicise wherever possible the information on the Register.
Give support to any educational endeavour free of charge.
The recording on the Register should include the following:
- To Record all woven tartan designs, their date, creators and with whom the copyright rests
- Note any conventions or restrictions as to their use and weaving along with information that would be useful for commerce. (the original weaver etc.)
- Record any legal restrictions such as Design Act Registration, etc..
Provide the services of, design, adaptations, and identification, whilst giving general tartan information and advice to inquirers. This should maintain the status of tartan by preventing trivialisation and unnecessary proliferation
Be prepared to hand over to and actively campaign for a formal Scottish government register.
Business Structure
The business structure adopted at present is that of a Limited Liability Company call ‘Tartan Registrations Limited’. It will trade under the name ‘Scottish Tartans World Register’.
The company is a recognised Scottish Charity No: SCO 031800
The business is to be controlled by a small Board that looks after the business side yet has the support of an expert body that can interpret modern tartan convention.
